Ms. Nosisa Mdutshane Mfayela: Nosisa is a Counselling Psychologist who has been registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa since 1994. She started her career as a student counsellor at the Peninsula Technikon (now Cape Peninsular University (CPU), before pursuing a career as an Organisational Development Consultant in one of South Africa's major consulting firms, Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group where she worked as a consultant in Organisational Development. There she worked with the firm's major clients in the Manufacturing, Financial Services, Construction, and Retail Industries. This combined experience formed a strong foundation for her latter private practice which she began in Benoni in the East Rand, providing psychological services at an era where little was understood about its role. During this period, she worked with the South African Depression &Anxiety Group (SADAG) JHB, in the role of mental health facilitation training as well as providing psychological services. She also worked with an NGO, the Daveyton Youth Group on the training of HIV/AIDS lay counsellors, as well as running a support group.
It is during this period that she was invited by a youth organisation based in Italy, Peace Waves, to give input on 'the role of education in South Africa', in the Education Forum and the 5th Assembly of the People'sUnited Nations, in Turin and Perugia.
Whilst running private practice for 20 years, concurrently, she provided consulting services to organisations on EAP and Organisational Development, including providing EAP services to employees of the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal. During this period in private practice she has also been nurtured by one of the founders of the Teleos Leadership Institute in Philadelphia, who has authored and co-authored books on Emotional Intelligence. She also spent a month at the Tavistock Institute in London, deepening her knowledge of psychodynamic psychotherapy when she was sent by the Institute for Psychodynamic Child Psychotherapy (IPCP - Johannesburg). Concurrent to running a private practice, currently, she participates in the training of psychologists at the University Of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), where she supervises Master's Psychology students.
Nosisa matriculated at Ndamase High School in Umtata in the Eastern Cape, before proceeding to the University of Transkei where she obtained a Bachelor of Science. She trained as a teacher at Rhodes University (H.D.E), before obtaining an Honours and a Master's degree in Psychology at the University of Durban- Westville (UDW). When she worked at Deloitte and Touche as a business consultant, she saw the need to upskill herself in business, obtaining a certificate in Management Advancement Programme (MAP) at Witwatersrand University. Later, as an independent practitioner, she obtained a Certificate in Organisation Systems Development (OSD), from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, USA.
Albeit being a later bloomer, in keeping with cultivating and leading the talk on wellness, Nosisa is a keen athlete (walker/runner), earlier supported by the companionship of the diehard athletes of Randburg Harriers (Johannesburg), and later by Regents Harriers in Durban North. She has participated in many half marathons and marathons in Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal. To mention but a few, the 702 Discovery walk the talk, Soweto Marathon, the Deloitte Challenge, the Mandela Marathon, and has attempted two Comrades Marathons, sadly reaching the destinations after the official cut off times. It is still her dream to complete her Comrades marathon within the official cut-off times.
